What is the Microsoft 70-417 Exam and Why Should I Care?

Hello everyone. Today, I’d like to tell you about Microsoft exam 70-417: Upgrading Your Skills to MCSA Windows Server 2012.
This mega-test, actually three tests in one; more details in a moment. It is an upgrade for Windows administrators currently holding one of these Microsoft titles:
Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator (MCSA), Windows Server 2008
Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), Virtualization Administrator on Windows Server 2008R2
MCITP: Enterprise Messaging Administrator 2010
MCITP: Lync Server Administrator 2010
MCITP: SharePoint Administrator 2010
MCITP: Enterprise Desktop Administrator on Windows 7

You can become a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), if you pass the 70-417 exam. Do not confuse the MCSA designation with the Server 2012 MCSA. This is a separate entity from the Windows Server 2008 MCSA.
As I mentioned earlier in this blog post 70-417 is a composite examination that consists three separate but related testlets. These testlets contain material from the following Windows Server 2012 certification exam:

Exam 70-411: Administration of Windows Server 2012
Exam 70-412: Configuring Advanced Windows Server 2012 Service Services

Each testlet is timed individually, but you must take them all at once. At the end of the third testlet, you will receive an overall pass/fail score.
The exam titles will show that the 70-417 content covers everything from Windows Server 2012 installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. These tests will place a strong emphasis on PowerShell v3 Before you sit for the 417 exam, make sure you’re fluent in PowerShell.
Microsoft seems to have a problem (in my humble opinion anyway) with adding unnecessary complexity to their IT certification portfolio. Passing the 70-417 exam will make you an MCSA in Windows Server 2012. However, there are two additional credentials that rank higher on the “Microsoft prestige” scale than the MCSA.
Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE), Desktop Infrastructure
MCSE in Server Infrastructure

You must pass the following tests to upgrade your Windows Server 2008 MCITP into the Windows Server 2012 MCE in Desktop Infrastructure:
70-415: Implementing a desktop infrastructure
70-416: Implementing Desktop App Deployments

These exams are required to bring your Server 2008 MCITP into line with the Windows Server 2012 MCE in Server Infrastructure.
70-413: Designing and Implementing Server Infrastructure
70-414: Implementing a Advanced Server Infrastructure

Don Jones, Greg Shields and James Conrad, my SPOTO colleagues, have all the Windows Server 2012 certification exams covered. I am currently finishing a training program on the 70-417 exam. We are here to help you.
